| Gospel:
"The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask
the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest."
(Mt. 9:37)
"I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold.
These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there
will be one flock, one shepherd." (John 10:16)
St.
Vincent: "My God, my mercy, you, in your infinite mercy will
grant me in a special way the gift to promote, establish...
a pious institution of a universal apostolate... so that
you may be recognized in all as Infinite Love." (Inspiration
of January 9, 1835)
Our
Constitutions: "The Congregation promotes the spiritual growth
of its neighbor, by reawakening the Christian life in every
baptized person, ... and by forming apostles for the
work of the Church, so that soon there may be but one fold
and one Shepherd." (#3)
It was St. Vincent's experience
of God as infinite love and mercy which led him to reflect
on the meaning of God's love for us. He recognized that
God had created us in the very image of God and since God
is love we are created in the image of love, to love our
neighbor as ourselves - to love.
His studies led him to understand
the meaning of love according to St. Thomas Aquinas who
defined love as willing the good of the other. Therefore,
because we are created to be love, we are created to seek
the good of the other. This understanding took form on the
9th of January in 1835. While making his thanksgiving after
mass, St. Vincent was inspired to establish an institution
of the Catholic Apostolate which was to call all people,
especially the baptized to take up their call to bring God's
love into the world and to share in the mission of Jesus.
Pallottines are called upon
to give form to that charism in their time, to promote the
apostolic mission of all, especially the laity, and to collaborate
with them in the various works of evangelization.
