| Scripture:
"...(you) have clothed yourselves with a new self, which is
being renewed; (you) are formed anew in the image of (your)
Creator." (Colossians 3:10)
St.
Vincent: "Our soul (is) a living image of God. Not painted
on canvas, not made of wood, stone or metal, but a living
spiritual reality representing God."
Our
Constitutions: "United in the prayer of praise, our spiritual
bonds are reinforced and enriched with the inexhaustible gifts
of God, so that we become living witnesses of his merciful
Love in the world." (#56)
In Genesis we read, "Let us
make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have
dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air,
and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the
creatures that crawl on the ground." This is a key text
in understanding Pallottine spirituality.
At the core of St. Vincent's
spirituality was his experience of God as Infinite Love
and Mercy. As he contemplated his experience, he was caught
up with the truth that God who is Love created us to be
Love and sent the Son to restore us to the image and likeness
in which we were created.. He would say that God was so
crazy with love that, "God became human so that humans could
become God."
We are meant to be love incarnate
as Jesus was. As Pallottines we realize that we cannot be
effective in the work of the Kingdom if we do not first
strive to be living images of God's love. That is something
we need for ourselves, but we must also witness that love
to others in community and to all whom we serve.
